As functional medicine practitioners, we know that nutrition and lifestyle are among the most powerful levers for preventing and reversing all chronic disease, from cardiovascular disease and hypertension to cancer and type 2 diabetes. Yet we also see firsthand how challenging it can be for patients to translate recommendations into sustained daily practice.
Deeply ingrained habits don’t shift overnight. In fact, a meta-analysis of 20 studies involving more than 2,600 participants found that health-related habits typically take 2–5 months to form, which is far longer than the popular “21-day” myth suggests.
This is why behavior-change support is essential. Coaching, journaling, habit stacking, tracking apps, and even gamification can all help patients build momentum. But one of the most powerful motivators remains the experience of feeling better.
When patients begin to notice clearer thinking, lighter moods, and improved energy, even if they’ve been practicing new habits for only a few days, they gain the confidence and motivation to carry on. Progress, not perfection, is what ultimately sustains change.
10-Day Nutrition Reset to Improve Mood and Biomarkers
Short-term, structured resets can be an especially effective entry point. In fact, evidence shows that even brief periods of focused nutrition and lifestyle shifts can markedly improve biomarkers and self-reported wellbeing.
In one small study, just 10 days on a Mediterranean-style program significantly improved energy, alertness, and positive mood in young women. Another study of 54 adults participating in a structured 10-day healthy eating challenge reported an 80% increase in confidence to modify eating behaviors, alongside improvements in fiber intake, food variety, and meal preparation habits [Ref. Nudging Behavioral Changes: Evidence from Healthy Eating Challenge].
Resets like these work because they combine functional interventions, accountability, and an environment built for success. One such program, refined and applied over decades, comes from my longtime colleague Dr. Mark Hyman, who recently joined us for the Functional Medicine is Longevity Medicine™ Masterclass.
We appreciate Dr. Hyman’s contribution to the Masterclass. His insights and big-picture thinking left us feeling optimistic about the future of healthcare, and live attendees fell in love with his dog, Lenny. The recording is available in the Younger You™ Practitioner Training Program.
Dr. Hyman’s 10-Day Detox is not a crash diet. It’s a focused, guided reset designed to lower toxic burden, support phase I and II detoxification pathways, and initiate favorable shifts in gene expression.
Rooted in core functional medicine principles, the program addresses more than detoxification alone. Daily exposure to environmental toxins from food, water, air, and personal care products not only burdens our detox pathways but also influences our epigenome, altering gene expression in ways that can accelerate aging, drive inflammation, and compromise resilience and longevity.
By combining fundamental principles of functional medicine, such as targeted nutrition, lifestyle practices, and supplement protocols, the 10-Day Detox can help the body recover from these stressors and create the physiological conditions for repair and renewal.
In our clinic, we see it all the time. Patients start feeling better simply by removing processed foods and re-introducing whole, nutrient-dense meals. Energy improves. Brain fog lifts. Inflammatory symptoms ease.
Dr. Hyman’s 10-Day Detox shows similarly striking results. Participants in his program report:
- 60% reduction in chronic symptoms, likely reflecting decreased inflammatory burden and improved detoxification efficiency
- Average 7-lb weight loss, linked to improved insulin sensitivity, reduced processed food intake, and better metabolic regulation
- Improved digestion, associated with decreased exposure to irritants and improved gut motility with higher fiber intake
- Better energy and mood, connected to stabilized blood sugar, lowered systemic inflammation, and nutrient repletion
- Sharper thinking, reflecting reduced neuroinflammatory load, and improved mitochondrial function
- More restful sleep supported by stabilized cortisol patterns and reduced evening stimulant exposure from processed foods
Taken together, these changes reflect more than temporary symptom relief. They align with functional medicine pillars we are familiar with: lowering the inflammatory load, improving detoxification function, restoring balance to glucose and insulin dynamics, and ultimately creating a strong foundation for longer-term epigenetic resilience and healthy aging.
How a 10-Day Detox Can Jumpstart Energy, Focus, and Improve Long-Term Health
The 10-Day Detox consists of three core stages: preparation, the detox phase, and reintroduction. A supplement protocol helps close common nutrient gaps during the reset, while targeted recipes and meal planning make the process both structured and doable. For practitioners, this program can serve as a low-barrier entry point for motivated patients.
When combined with epigenetic interventions such as DNA methylation-supportive foods, stress modulation, and exercise, this reset can prime the system for long-term rejuvenation.
Consider a hypothetical mid-life patient who comes into the clinic feeling exhausted, foggy, and discouraged. They have tried “eating healthy” but still struggle with energy, weight, and focus. After a 10-Day Detox, they notice a lighter mood, more consistent energy, and clearer thinking. These early wins give them confidence to continue with more sustainable changes.
We see this pattern so often. Even a brief, structured reset can spark meaningful momentum and pave the way for longer-term interventions.
Fighting Environmental Toxins That Act as Epigenetic Stressors
What makes this program especially relevant in 2025 is the growing evidence that toxins function as epigenetic stressors. A scientific literature review published this year highlights how environmental toxicants, including air pollution, heavy metals, cigarette smoke, and alcohol, can reshape gene expression through epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation and histone modification.
These exposures alter cellular signaling, impair detoxification capacity, and activate inflammatory and metabolic pathways linked to chronic diseases including cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurodegeneration, and metabolic dysfunction. Notably, these epigenetic shifts may persist across generations, influencing disease vulnerability long after the initial exposure.
This evidence reinforces what every functional medicine practitioner knows: our environment continuously interacts with our biology, shaping gene expression and long-term health.

By reducing exposure and supporting detoxification, we can help patients reclaim healthier gene expression and slow biological aging. Short, structured resets, such as the 10-Day Detox, are powerful tools to align patients with their longer-term goals of resilience and healthy longevity.
This is not a quick fix. It is a clinically informed, science-aligned reset that can serve as a springboard into sustainable lifestyle change.
If you’re a clinician, consider how this program can support your patients’ health journeys.
If you’re a patient, know that even ten days of clean eating and structured support can make a measurable difference.
As we often tell patients, this kind of reset can be the first step toward building a healthier, more resilient future.
