Who is eligible to apply to the Clinical Development Program?
Acceptance into either CDP program is by application only. Applicants must:
- Be practicing or student professionals: ND, MD, DO, PA, NP, DC, LAc, RN, CNS, CCN, PharmD, RD, IFNCP
- Have completed at least basic level functional medicine training. We will not, for example, be doing didactic reviews of biochemistry that relates to common chronic conditions, although pieces will come up in the application of interventions.
- Submit the appropriate application materials (including CV and cover letter) and application fee
Is IFM Membership required?
Membership is not required prior to enrolling in the program. We’re happy to announce, thanks to IFM Educational Partnership status, your tuition includes complimentary 1-year IFM membership with access to the IFM Tool Kit. If you already have an IFM membership, you will be granted a 1-year extension.
When will I hear back about my application?
Please allow up to 2 weeks for your application to be processed.
Can I fit this program into my already busy week?
Based on feedback from previous course participants, the estimated time required to complete each program is 5-10 hours per week though you may find yourself spending more time some weeks if you’re doing a deep dive on a particular topic or if you opt to participate in a project. Meetings are recorded so you can join live or opt to watch/listen to the recording later.
Does the program run every week of the year?
With the exception of some holiday weeks, we are a year-round program just as we are a year-round clinic. Even though we highlight specific portions of the portal materials at regular intervals, there are some ‘catch up’ weeks where no new materials are highlighted to give you a chance to catch up with what’s been covered or take a deeper dive into an area of interest.
Can I apply to the CDP programs if I am not based in the U.S.?
Yes, our programs are all delivered online via webinar, online portal, and emails. Each Clinic Rounds, Q&A Session, Case Review, and Teach-in is recorded if your time zone or work/life schedule prevents you from joining live. We have had/currently have a number of practitioners go through our programs from various locations around the world.
Can you clarify the difference between your programs?
The Clinical Development Program is for Functional Medicine practitioners of all backgrounds. Participants gain insight into how to apply an end-to-end Functional Medicine approach via access to our weekly Nutrition Clinical Grand Rounds, Physician Rounds, monthly Q&A, monthly case reviews, teach-ins and dialogue with Dr. Fitzgerald and team. Note: There are no CNS hours opportunity with this option, and no direct patient time.
The Functional Nutrition Residency Program is a 1-year program specifically designed for nutritionists who are seeking supervised practice hours to achieve their CNS credential. Residents will become a direct member of our nutrition team and receive training in all aspects of therapeutic nutrition care.
What is the biggest benefit from participating in this program?
We hear consistently that the biggest benefits that participants get are advancing their clinical competency, confidence, and ability to think through any case from a Functional Medicine perspective.
This is a unique opportunity to mentor with a member of the IFM faculty and learn her approach to building highly detailed, personalized protocols in a Functional Medicine Center of Excellence.
You’ll also have the opportunity to connect with and build relationships other like-minded FxMed practitioners all over the country (and world) with various specialties and diverse insight.
Is this appropriate for someone who is seeking IFM certification?
The CDP is built on the foundation of IFM training. We recommend at least completing AFMCP, and being in progress with the IFM’s Advanced Practice Modules in order to get the most out of the CDP experience. However, you do not need to be seeking IFM certification or have completed the advanced training modules to be eligible to apply.
Who can I contact if I have more questions about the program?
Please email your questions to [email protected]
Do participants receive a certification upon completion?
CDP participants receive a PDF certificate of completion and completion badge in JPEG/PNG format for use on their website.
Will I be able to get help with my current patient cases?
There is the opportunity to ask questions about cases you’re working on in the monthly Q&A. You’ll also have access to a private Facebook forum where you’re encouraged to post your cases/questions where the group, including the clinic staff, can provide feedback and support.
Does Dr. Fitzgerald dialogue directly with individual CDP students?
Participants of the educational program have the opportunity to connect with Dr. Fitzgerald in several ways. Monthly Q&As provide an opportunity for direct dialogue since the purpose is to answer the CDP group’s questions in an open format. Case reviews are another opportunity to quiz our practitioners about patient assessment and individualized protocols. Some limited engagement exists to dialogue during our clinical rounds, with the caveat that those are internal meetings that serve as an important piece of how our clinic works. Our private Facebook forum, while primarily intended for participants to dialogue together, is also a place where Dr. Fitzgerald and/or team will circle through and weigh in on posted questions and dialogue.
