Stress. It feels like some unavoidable aspect of l Stress. It feels like some unavoidable aspect of life that you can't get rid of without winning the lottery, or retiring, or moving to a secluded private island (or maybe all three).

And it's something we all experience: Heck, I can feel like I'm doing pretty well at life, but my raggedy chewed-up cuticles can tell an entirely different story. (The term for that is autocannibalism, by the way. Yikes!)

Instead of letting it get you down, though, think of it more like a call to action. Your stress levels require your attention to bring them down.

Taking the time to practice some basic relaxation techniques - like meditation or deep breathing - can have a profound effect on your biological age and associated chronic diseases of aging. And as you turn down your stress levels, your day-to-day experiences with stress will also drop!

This is why having a relaxation practice is a fundamental pillar of the Younger You method - just a few minutes a day can help slow down biological aging (as we’ve seen in my research studies).

Epiutrient-responsive genes are genes whose expres Epiutrient-responsive genes are genes whose expression is changed based on the nutrients present in our diet.

An example is the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) gene - a master regulator of our body’s antioxidant responses.

NRF2 increases production of anti-inflammatory / antioxidant molecules to protect against toxins and oxidative stress.

It is downregulated in many chronic diseases, including heart disease, neurodegenerative disease, diabetes, autoimmunity, and cancer, and has been found to be hypermethylated in liver, prostate, colorectal, breast, bladder, stomach, and ovarian cancer.

The good news is that the NRF2 gene can be uninhibited (aka reactivated) by a number of epinutrients including but not limited to those in turmeric and green tea.

That means that turmeric and green tea can protect you from inflammation and oxidative damage by turning your NRF2 gene back on (by inhibiting DNA methylation on this gene).

This is why I am so interested in using food to optimize health AND why I'm less concerned about your DNA than your choices. I cover this extensively in the Younger You book (plus there’s a comprehensive list of food sources for all important epinutrients!).

No food has generated such debate among nutrition No food has generated such debate among nutrition experts over the years as the humble egg.

The primary reason for this controversy is their cholesterol content that nay-sayers warn can clog your arteries. And of course the decades of dietary guidelines that recommended limiting egg intake or avoiding eggs altogether, even as those have now changed to acknowledge that eggs are NOT harmful as once thought.

In fact, eggs are a good food for longevity in part because they provide a rich source of nutrition needed for healthy DNA methylation. And we know that healthy, balanced DNA methylation directly impacts biological age.

And while egg whites are great for extra protein, don’t throw out the egg yolks! They are one of the best food sources of choline (aside from liver), which is not only a vital methyl donor but also an important epinutrient for brain function, mood, liver health, pregnancy, and more. So save those yolks for later (whip them into homemade mayo or dairy-free custard for example).

Current research backs up what Indian culture and Current research backs up what Indian culture and Ayurvedic medicine have known for centuries: Curcumin has the ability to support a healthy inflammatory response, joint health, muscle recovery, detoxification, the immune system, and ability to favorably influence gene expression.

Yet no matter how potently medicinal the plant is, if you can’t successfully get it into the cell, therapeutic value is minimized. And curcumin has long been known to have poor absorption and quick clearance, making it challenging and expensive to deliver in therapeutic quantities.

Until now. New advances in how to transform the structure of curcumin may change that.

In this episode of New Frontiers I’m joined by Dr. Sonia Malani from @integrativetherapeutics Integrative Therapeutics to talk about the latest advances in curcumin deliverability and why it matters.

Dr. Malani breaks down the keys to bioavailability in a way that is simple to understand and easy to pass on to our patients so they get the therapeutic influence we are hoping for.
