Dr. Sandison confesses that when she first heard Dr. Dale Bredesen talk about his work reversing cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s disease she was skeptical. But when she started to apply the Bredesen principles in her clinical work and saw just how meaningful the improvements were to patients’ symptoms and quality of life, as she puts it: “…how do I do anything else with my life, but basically tell as many people who will listen that this is possible?”

She then went on to found the first two residential care facilities for individuals with cognitive decline that are based on the Bredesen approach. She’s published research on her clinical outcomes and is continuing to gather more data for publication.

The information and inspiration she shares are relevant to anyone dealing with cognitive decline, caring for someone with cognitive decline, or even those of us who want to preserve and optimize cognitive function as we move through life. I found her report that environmental toxins were one of the most common findings among her patient population illuminating.

In some cases, genetics can provide valuable insights into specific challenges that need to be addressed. For instance, a diminished ability to produce antioxidants may indicate a need to incorporate colorful vegetables into the diet.

Rarely, genetic testing can identify specific conditions that can then be addressed—such as a mutation in an enzyme that relies on a specific B vitamin, which can result in a seizure disorder that can be remedied by supplementing with that B vitamin.

However, in many instances observed in clinical practice, DNA testing can exacerbate anxiety and lead to unnecessary purchases of expensive supplements. Individuals may believe that certain diseases are inevitable based on their genetic predispositions, but this is not the case.

Medical professionals and researchers are increasingly recognizing that environmental factors play a crucial role in gene expression, a field known as epigenetics. This understanding emphasizes the importance of environmental influences, such as diet, movement, and sleep, in supporting and optimizing health.

Of the body’s 10 trillion cells, about 1.6 trillion belong to your skin, making it your largest organ. This vital organ has a lot of responsibilities including regulating body temperature, preventing moisture loss, and providing a protective barrier against environmental stressors.
