MDL-approved supplements are here! After many requests from those of you adopting the Methylation Diet & Lifestyle program, Dr. Fitzgerald is thrilled to announce the launch of her MDL-approved supplement line. These are cornerstone Functional Medicine products for us in our quest to support whole-body, healthy epigenetic expression and metabolic methylation. We are also using our line as a part of the full MDL research study underway now at the Helfgott Institute in Portland, Oregon.
MDL Flora provides a high-potency delivery of Lactobacillus Plantarum probiotic species, studied for its ability to survive the journey through the digestive tract and for its numerous health effects.
Good gut health is foundational for healthy methylation, gene expression, reduced disease risk and vitality. There are several ways in which a healthy gut microbiome supports healthy methylation and genetic expression:
Nutrient production: Some specific species of healthy bacteria produce important nutrients for us, including those used in the methylation cycle. Lactobacillus Plantarum is one of the only lactobacilli species to produce natural forms of folate in the gut, that is available for absorption and use in the body. Folate is a cornerstone nutrient for methylation and epigenetic modulation.
Epigenetic modulators: Gut bacteria produce chemicals that act as signaling molecules to our own cells, and even the DNA inside our cells. Some of our own pro-inflammatory genes (such as TLR4) can be turned on by signaling molecules from unhealthy microbes and can be turned off by healthy microbe species. This modulation of our own inflammatory pathways happens directly at the level of our epigenome, by changing the levels and patterns of methylation on regions of the genome that turn genes on or off.
Reduce methylation drain: The anti-inflammatory effect of commensal gut microbes at the genetic level, coupled with their other ways of reducing inflammation both in the gut and systemically throughout the whole body. Lactobacillus plantarum has been shown to dampen other types of inflammatory signaling and block inflammatory messengers from unhealthy bacterial species. It has also been demonstrated to improve the integrity of the gut lining, improving protection from unwanted pro-inflammatory substances.
Why is it so important to stem chronic inflammation? Inflammation and the oxidative stress it generates is one factor that draws on the pool of methylation resources since it encourages homocysteine to convert to glutathione (a master antioxidant molecule) rather than to produce methyl donor compounds such as SAMe.
Reduce gut inflammation and support healthy methylation and gene expression with our super-strength MDL Flora.
