Whole foods, which are exactly what they sound lik Whole foods, which are exactly what they sound like - foods in their original form like vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds - have incredible healing abilities that we are only beginning to understand.

Honestly, we may never fully grasp all the nuances of how the components of whole foods influence physiology, because the complexity of nature’s wisdom truly is mind-boggling.

In fact, there is a concept known as the “dark matter of nutrition,” which reminds us that, as extraordinary as the components of whole foods that we already know about are, most of what is contained within a whole food hasn’t yet been defined.

Epinutrients are these incredible compounds that h Epinutrients are these incredible compounds that have the remarkable ability to regulate gene expression (that is, they have an epigenetic effect, hence epinutrient).
 
It is this ability, I believe, that drives all the extraordinary downstream beneficial effects of whole natural foods, including their anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and bio age reversing properties. 

There are many, many epinutrients, these are just some of the key players:

✅ Folate is one of the most important epinutrients involved in genetic expression, making it essential for DNA synthesis and repair. Food sources: green leafy vegetables, asparagus, mushrooms, eggs, poultry, sunflower seeds, rosemary, sage, cilantro, and more.
✅ Vitamin B12 is a key player in folate metabolism and the methylation cycle; it’s also essential for mitochondrial energy production and neuronal cell membranes (known as myelin sheaths), among many other roles. Food sources: seaweed, shiitake mushrooms, liver, fish, beef, eggs, poultry, nutritional yeast, and more.
✅ Betaine is used in the methylation cycle to convert homocysteine back to methionine by donating a methyl group, and can also be converted into folate. Food sources: spinach, beet, egg yolk, liver, sunflower seeds, and more.

Thanks to @carrielevine.cnm Carrie Levine, Certifi Thanks to @carrielevine.cnm Carrie Levine, Certified Nurse Midwife and IFMCP, for outlining important and thoughtful interventions that will certainly do a lot to optimize epigenetic health and our aging experience in this month’s blog.

Midlife is an extremely active time epigenetically. Pro-inflammatory genes tend to become hypomethylated and get ramped up, tumor-suppressor genes can become progressively more silenced, and genes that promote cancer (known as oncogenes) can be turned on. It’s a milieu that we need to be paying active attention to.

Thankfully, there’s a lot we can do. Nutrition and lifestyle can be a powerful antidote to the negative changes to DNA methylation that ramp up in midlife, as we’ve seen in our case series study in women aged 45-65 (and also in our earlier research in middle-aged men).

Our female participants’ biological age, as measured by DNA methylation analysis, was reversed by an average of 4.60 years after following the Younger You program for just 8 weeks!
