A recent Frontiers in Immunology review explores how polyphenols (bioactive compounds found in plant foods like berries, olive oil, tea, cacao, and herbs) directly influence immune cell metabolism.

On Valentine’s Day, we tend to think about hearts On Valentine’s Day, we tend to think about hearts in a symbolic way. But human connection protects the heart in a very real, biological sense.

One of the longest-running studies on health and longevity, the Harvard Study of Adult Development, has followed people for more than 80 years. Its most consistent finding isn’t about diet, exercise, or cholesterol.

It’s this: close, supportive relationships predict longer life and better health (physically and mentally) than almost any other factor.

Strong social connection is associated with:
 • Lower inflammation
 • Better immune function
 • Reduced cardiovascular risk
 • Slower cognitive decline
 • Lower all-cause mortality

In contrast, chronic loneliness increases mortality risk at a level comparable to smoking or obesity (Holt-Lunstad et al., PLoS Medicine).

From a functional medicine lens, this makes perfect sense. Connection regulates the nervous system, dampens stress signaling, improves sleep, and directly influences inflammatory and metabolic pathways tied to aging.

So today, consider this part of your longevity plan:
- Call someone you love.
- Sit across from someone and share a meal.
- Laugh. Listen. Be seen.

It’s not soft science. It’s foundational biology.
