We are exposed to toxins every day – through our air, our water, our personal care and household products and much more. The good news is, there is a lot we can do to limit our exposure. As a functional nutritionist I believe choosing non-toxic, clean products is just as important as clean eating. That is why I love this recipe for DIY Flaxseed Hair Gel! It uses just 2 simple ingredients, is easy to personalize and it is completely safe and chemical-free.
DIY Flaxseed Hair Gel |
- Combine water and flaxseed in saucepan
- Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 9-10 minutes until desired consistency is reached. Gel will slowly thicken the longer you simmer.
- Once thickened, remove from heat and strain using a fine mesh strainer into a glass jar. A canning funnel is very useful here! Allowing the mixture to strain while hot is best, using a spoon to work the gel through the strainer and into the jar. Allow the mixture to continue to strain and use a knife or spoon on the bottom of the strainer to get all the gel into your jar.
- Add essential oil, honey and/or Aloe Vera gel, if desired. (I love lavender and lemongrass EO).
- Mix and enjoy! Gel will last for ~7-10 days or longer if stored in the refrigerator.
Optional:
A few drops of your favorite essential oil
A drop or two of honey - Honey is a humectant; it seals in moisture and softens hair
1-3 tbsp of Aloe Vera Gel – Aloe will soften hair, add shine and is full of nutrients!
Once I have mixed up this hair gel how do I use it?
Put it on my hair, leave it in for a while then wash it out ? ? ? ? ?
I use just like store bought hair gel- so for my curly hair I put it on when my hair is really wet and let it air dry. Since I don’t wash my hair every day, on day two I’ll wet my hair a little with a spray bottle and add a little more gel to smooth frizz. I’ve no experience with hair you can brush… lol. We’d love to hear about your experience and how the gel works for other hair types. – Karen
