BPA Exposure Increases Risk of Death from Any Cause

There has been a wealth of research on the negative health effects of Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure. However, very little research has looked at long-term health outcomes. This study, published in the top tier JAMA Network Journal, serves as a massive warning and confirmation of the dangers from exposure to this endocrine-disrupting chemical, commonly found in plastics and on thermal paper receipts. Researchers found a huge 49% increase in long-term all-cause mortality associated with those who had higher urinary levels of BPA (an indicator of higher exposure, or weaker detoxification).

The researchers also note prior work that demonstrates an association between BPA exposure and atherosclerosis, coronary artery stenosis, and reduction in heart rate variability in humans. They highlight just how ubiquitous BPA exposure is in the US (90 percent of the population affected) and call for a need to investigate underlying mechanisms. Not least, they caution that BPA substitutes such as BPF and BPS may have similar toxic effects to BPA.
