Health Intelligence – The Future of Healthcare

Health Intelligence

Health Intelligence

It’s an exciting time to be practicing medicine. We are poised to be adopting a systems model in practice, with access to large omics datasets and the assistance of artificial intelligence to crunch the findings. To that end, I have been PAYING ATTENTION to what’s out there. Needless to say, I am excited to see the launch of Onegevity: a partnership with Thorne that Dr. Bob Rountree has been telling me about forever.

As they put it:

Onegevity Health is a new consumer health intelligence company that combines a unique multi-omic artificial intelligence (AI) platform with user-friendly, at-home tests, products, and digital health.”

Wow! Check out their blog this month and let me know what you think. Are you jumping in? Or are you in? I am excited to hear from you! ~DrKF

Imagine the day when you and your patient can view their health metrics on one digital platform. The day when one-dimensional testing – blood, genetics, and microbiome – are combined to provide a whole-body health picture – both inside and out. A day when all this testing is done through user-friendly, affordable, at-home test kits that offer the most advanced analytical technology. Well, that day is here.

Introducing Onegevity™

Onegevity Health is a new consumer health intelligence company that combines a unique multi-omic artificial intelligence (AI) platform with user-friendly, at-home tests, products, and digital health services. Their mission: Use an all-in-one platform to empower individuals seeking better health with the best science from personalized health research – a platform that targets underserved, wide-spread chronic health issues across patient populations. Sound like anything you deal with?

By using AI, the Onegevity platform helps you understand how a change at one level (e.g., the gut microbiome) drives healthy changes at another level (e.g., blood), while providing patients with metrics based on aggregated data from individuals with similar profiles. And AI is being used by companies around the world – software companies, clothing and makeup subscriptions, food delivery services – to provide consumers with a personalized experience using insights from everyone else similarly situated. It’s like how your brain intelligently uses a case study of one individual to make informed decisions about another – but on a significantly larger scale – using known metrics and data from clinics and patients worldwide – simultaneously. The more data in the platform, the smarter the platform.

The Onegevity platform integrates untargeted analyses of longitudinal biomarkers – including blood, metabolomics, the human genome, and microbiome profiles – to give consumers a comprehensive molecular portrait. Onegevity analytics distill trillions of data points into actionable insights for improved patient outcomes. As a practitioner, you receive access to everything your patient sees, including fully analyzed data and personalized interventions matched specifically to the patient for diet, exercise, and supplementation. Through the practitioner portal, you can manage a list of patients, review results, check on the status of patient tests and orders, and review supplement suggestions – so you have first-hand familiarity with their health recommendations.

GutBio™

Onegevity first launched an at-home gut microbiome test kit – GutBio™ – and is the only company offering whole genome shotgun sequencing, the most advanced sequencing available in the market. What makes GutBio different? Its technology has superceded 16S profiling, an outdated and less specific method. For example, 16S profiling can identify E. coli in your gut, but it can’t differentiate specific strains, such as E. coli 0157, which is dangerously pathogenic, whereas other strains are benign.

Onegevity has incorporated both metagenomic and metabolomic analyses and can detect tens of thousands of organisms undetectable by other technology. Instead of metatranscriptomic sequencing, Onegevity uses metagenomic sequencing, which looks at the more-stable DNA in the sample. Onegevity precisely identifies and measures bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast, archaea, and parasites, giving you an unparalleled picture of your microbiome and a diversity score. And the diversity of your gut microbiome is key. Contact with children, pets, a new environment, medications, foods, and even water all play a role in your gut’s diversity. Chronic conditions such as allergies and obesity are linked to less diversity in the gut.

Another big difference is testing methods that analyze RNA. Currently there are no validated ways to stabilize RNA at room temperature, which can lead to errors in the data of metatranscriptomic sequencing. Because a GutBio sample is stable for months at room temperature if you want to wait for it to be analyzed, gone are the days of storing poop in your freezer. And through all of this, the Onegevity scientists have realized how much is still unknown about the microbiome – virtually half of the DNA in the gut is still not characterized. Crazy, huh? With advanced testing like Onegevity, it’s only a matter of time until we know what everything is and what it means in terms of your health. In the meantime, we work with what we know!

Gutbio benefits patients experiencing constipation, diarrhea, gas, bloating, cramps, abdominal pain, nausea, and heartburn, or who have a family history of IBS or IBD; and GutBio is a useful test for those without these issues, too. Athletes, high-performers, biohackers, and others are turning to gut health insights for a deeper look into training, recovery, brain function, and sleep. Gut bacteria is probably responsible for producing 86 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin B6, 37 percent of folate, 31 percent of vitamin B12, and 27 percent of niacin. B vitamins are critical for maintaining metabolism, energy production, neurological function, and the formation of red blood cells. With suboptimal amounts of gut bacteria, your patients might need more B vitamins than you think.

You and your patient will receive detailed insights regarding what is causing their GI discomfort from analysis of their stool sample and responses to a health questionnaire. The results provide actionable, personalized recommendations for a diet regimen that includes tasty recipes, beneficial exercises, and dietary supplementation to rebalance the gut microbiome and relieve symptoms. Results offer up-to-date, scientifically backed solutions for health and lifestyle. It’s nice to know that not everyone doesn’t need to follow a FODMAP diet.

World Class Partnerships

Onegevity Health is a sister company to Thorne Research, and since Onegevity’s launch earlier this year, it has become the leading health intelligence platform for wellness. Onegevity’s founders, Dr. Joel Dudley and Dr. Chris Mason, along with their scientific and medical teams, have published more than 400 peer-reviewed publications that describe cutting-edge work in biomedical data integration and predictive health. By partnering with Thorne, a leading health and technology company, and the only supplement manufacturer that collaborates with Mayo Clinic on wellness research, Onegevity offers the most advanced, personalized care experience and the highest-quality nutritional supplements.

Onegevity will soon expand its services to include whole-genome sequencing and blood testing, as well as personalized products and services for a host of new populations. They are working exclusively with partner company Drawbridge Health in the development of the OneDraw™ blood sampling system, a convenient and nearly painless blood-drawing experience across multiple applications used in the Onegevity platform.

If you are seeking a way to grow your business, as well as making it easier for patients who require multi-dimensional testing and personalized solutions, then the future of wellness is here. It’s okay if you aren’t an expert in all things health. Onegevity was made so you can focus on your expertise. Your patients will thank you for making health care easier, readily accessible, and more understandable with Onegevity.
