GutBio™
Onegevity first launched an at-home gut microbiome test kit – GutBio™ – and is the only company offering whole genome shotgun sequencing, the most advanced sequencing available in the market. What makes GutBio different? Its technology has superceded 16S profiling, an outdated and less specific method. For example, 16S profiling can identify E. coli in your gut, but it can’t differentiate specific strains, such as E. coli 0157, which is dangerously pathogenic, whereas other strains are benign.
Onegevity has incorporated both metagenomic and metabolomic analyses and can detect tens of thousands of organisms undetectable by other technology. Instead of metatranscriptomic sequencing, Onegevity uses metagenomic sequencing, which looks at the more-stable DNA in the sample. Onegevity precisely identifies and measures bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast, archaea, and parasites, giving you an unparalleled picture of your microbiome and a diversity score. Another big difference is testing methods that analyze RNA. Currently there are no validated ways to stabilize RNA at room temperature, which can lead to errors in the data of metatranscriptomic sequencing. Because a GutBio sample is stable for months at room temperature if you want to wait for it to be analyzed, gone are the days of storing poop in your freezer. And through all of this, the Onegevity scientists have realized how much is still unknown about the microbiome – virtually half of the DNA in the gut is still not characterized. Crazy, huh?
