Not a Recommended COVID Remedy – Oleander Plant Linked to Serious Side Effects, Including Death

Following the recently-reported news that oleandrin, an extract of the oleander plant, may combat COVID-19, the nonprofit American Botanical Council (ABC) issued a concerned warning about oleander, raising the alarm about the plant’s substantial toxicity. All parts of the plant contain a poisonous chemical called oleandrin, also known as cardiac glycoside, that can cause serious side effects to the heart, including death. Oleander has recently been promoted as a potential treatment for COVID-19. “With respect to oleander, all parts of the plant are highly toxic, dangerous, and life-threatening when ingested. Consumers should not, ever, try to make a home-made remedy from or self-treat with oleander,” said ABC Founder and Executive Director Mark Blumenthal.
