Post-workout nutrition matters, especially for wom Post-workout nutrition matters, especially for women.

Research shows that when women delay eating after exercise and remain in a prolonged breakdown (catabolic) state, it can lead to:

 • metabolic downturn
 • appetite suppression
 • sleep disturbances

As @drstacysims often emphasizes, women’s physiology responds differently to training stress, and when you refuel is just as important as what you eat.

Fueling soon after exercise helps shift the body into recovery, supports metabolic health, and protects sleep and hormones.

Train smart. Recover smarter.

💡 Ready to unlock optimal health? Comment “fuel me” below and we will DM you the link to our podcast episode with Dr. Stacy Sims! Or head here: https://www.drkarafitzgerald.com/2023/05/01/how-to-optimize-exercise-training-based-on-womens-hormone-cycle-with-dr-stacy-sims/

Polyphenols aren’t just antioxidants. They’re doin Polyphenols aren’t just antioxidants. They’re doing real work.

A recent Frontiers in Immunology review explores how polyphenols (bioactive compounds found in plant foods like berries, olive oil, tea, cacao, and herbs) directly influence immune cell metabolism.

Why this matters in practice:

So much of what we see in functional medicine (autoimmunity, metabolic dysfunction, accelerated aging) is driven by immune systems that are stuck in the wrong metabolic gear.

This paper helps explain why certain foods and nutrients can meaningfully change immune behavior, not just dampen symptoms.

For me, this reinforces something we’ve been talking about for years: nutrition isn’t passive.

When it’s chosen well, it sends signals that affect mitochondrial function, inflammation, and even gene expression.

That’s a core theme in Younger You: using polyphenol-rich, targeted nutrition to support immune resilience and slow biological aging.

Ready to explore more? Comment YoungerYou and we will DM you the link.

This research was supported by public funding from national and European sources, including Portugal’s Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), the European Union’s Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe programs, and related regional research initiatives focused on healthy aging and cerebrovascular function.

The authors report no commercial or financial conflicts of interest. One or more authors served on the Frontiers editorial board at the time of submission; this role had no influence on the peer-review process or publication decision.
Researchers looked at so-called “super-agers” and Researchers looked at so-called “super-agers” and found they tend to carry fewer Alzheimer’s risk genes and more protective genetic variants compared to peers who experience cognitive decline.

At first glance, that sounds like luck.

But here’s the epigenetics takeaway 👇

Genes set the baseline. Expression is shaped over time.

Inflammation, metabolic health, sleep, nutrient signaling, and immune balance all influence whether risk genes get amplified or quieted.

From a functional medicine perspective, this reinforces a core principle:
🧬 Genetic risk is not genetic destiny.

Supporting brain health isn’t about a single gene or supplement. It’s about creating the biological conditions that favor resilience, repair, and adaptability across decades.

Aging well is less about “good genes” and more about how well your biology is supported to express them.

These medications are everywhere, and they can imp These medications are everywhere, and they can improve metabolic health and reduce inflammation. But emerging evidence shows that when appetite drops without structured nutrition, your gut microbiome can lose diversity, which may undermine these benefits and increase inflammation in the long run.

That matters because your microbiome supports digestion, immunity, energy, and even brain health.

If you’re using (or considering) a GLP-1 medication, understanding how it interacts with your gut and how food quality matters isn’t optional. It’s central to real, lasting health.

👉 Want practical guidance for supporting your gut while using GLP-1s? Comment GLP FOR GUT, and we’ll send you key insights.

On Valentine’s Day, we tend to think about hearts On Valentine’s Day, we tend to think about hearts in a symbolic way. But human connection protects the heart in a very real, biological sense.

One of the longest-running studies on health and longevity, the Harvard Study of Adult Development, has followed people for more than 80 years. Its most consistent finding isn’t about diet, exercise, or cholesterol.

It’s this: close, supportive relationships predict longer life and better health (physically and mentally) than almost any other factor.

Strong social connection is associated with:
 • Lower inflammation
 • Better immune function
 • Reduced cardiovascular risk
 • Slower cognitive decline
 • Lower all-cause mortality

In contrast, chronic loneliness increases mortality risk at a level comparable to smoking or obesity (Holt-Lunstad et al., PLoS Medicine).

From a functional medicine lens, this makes perfect sense. Connection regulates the nervous system, dampens stress signaling, improves sleep, and directly influences inflammatory and metabolic pathways tied to aging.

So today, consider this part of your longevity plan:
- Call someone you love.
- Sit across from someone and share a meal.
- Laugh. Listen. Be seen.

It’s not soft science. It’s foundational biology.

Happy Valentine’s Day 💗
